Full approval of a reserved matters planning application has now been granted for the new Norton Hill Primary School to be built on land Midsomer Norton adjacent to the rugby club. The site on Silver Street approved by B&NES local authority occupies land within easy walking distance of Norton Hill secondary school. The scheme approved includes measures both to widen Silver Street to ensure road safety, and to provide safe footpaths and cycleways from Norton Hill Secondary School and Charlton Park using land provided by the secondary school. The team planning the new school is delighted with the news. The new school’s Chair of Governors, Sharon Wiseman said “this is the end of three years of hard work needed to make sure the town has enough primary school places to accommodate the population growth brought by new housing in the area. The school will be a fantastic new option for local parents. We can now appoint a Head Teacher and recruit the key personnel we need”.
The school will be part of the Midsomer Norton Schools Partnership. This includes twenty two schools, including Norton Hill, Somervale and Writhlington secondary schools, and a range of local primary schools in the area. The success and experience of the Trust means that the new school will have strong backing and support. Mark Thompson, Deputy CEO of the Trust and the person responsible for planning the new school, said “With nearly 2500 new homes being built or about to be built in the Somer Valley area, a new school is essential for the future of the town. We are delighted that ISG has been contracted to build the school, as their track record in designing and building schools is outstanding. There will now be a high quality school place for every child in the area. The Norton Hill Primary school will provide something special for the next generation of local children – and will attract the highest quality of teachers”.
The plan is for Norton Hill Primary School to open to Reception pupils in September 2020. Once built, it will have the space to grow to 3 forms of entry in future as numbers in the area increase.
